POST 6 - My Cyber Security Journey

Updated: Jun 10, 2023

Working in IT, I've become addicted to trying to break into the Cyber Security realm. Luckily for me, I've managed to do this. The main goal was to show my skills and qualities, proving to others that I'm worth the time. I'm so grateful that over the years, I've been helped along the way.

So I started my Cyber Security studies probably a few years ago, however, this was more of a hobby and wasn't structured at all. Thankfully, a very considerate CSOC pushed me in the right direction and taught me a few interesting topics. He then recommended watching Nathan House - Station X, which I must say, gave me an amazing wealth of knowledge.

After, watching countless amounts of videos, doing some labs, and reading some books, I decided to pursue my lifelong ambition of becoming an Ethical Hackers/ Cyber Security Engineer. This task wasn't as easy as a lot of you may think, actually, it takes a lot of willpower and time.

For the last 3 - 4 years, my life has been constantly learning about Cyber Security in all its forms. My journey started off, whilst I was an apprentice at Just IT; believe it or not, this apprenticeship was unlike any other course I've ever been on. Their instructors/ tutors were terrific. I can't thank them enough for teaching me, a lot of skills that I've used throughout my career.

Cyber Security from my perspective is a lot of different sectors of IT, and luckily with my initial training from Just IT, I've been able to home in on my ambitions.

My path in terms of Cyber Security started with researching Security + and Network + by Compita, from a very young age, I was shown these two qualifications, however, never qualified in them. However, that being said, I then a few years later completed the CEH - "Certified Ethical Hacker" qualification by EC-Council, which was an extremely interesting certificate to get, and equally proves my knowledge of Cyber Security. After researching this qualification, I then started to read up on CISA - "Certified Information Security Auditor", as another potential route to pursue. Again, not stopping here, I also decided to do some online learning for GDPR - "General Data Protection Regulation", which has helped me understand the reasons for protecting our data, and as part of my journey to educate others.

My new chapter of my Cyber Security is to start learning the "Certified Infomation Systems Security Professional" qualification that focuses on eight security domains, and in the near future get this qualification as well. As I will be studying CISSP, I've decided to create a webpage specifically for CISSP, I'm hoping this page will be a good source of information and a quick guide for myself and others.
